How Popcorn is Like God's Word

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it."  Isaiah 55:10-11

Four thousand years ago, God fed his people something he called manna that had the feel of miniature popcorn kernels. God sent manna down from heaven each morning to feed the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness. Manna was edible only after it had been ground and heated. The Bible tells us that after the grinding and cooking process, the manna tasted like cakes baked with oil.

One day, Jesus told a group of Jews that he was the true bread from heaven of which manna was just a shadow. He went on to say that only those who drank his blood and ate his flesh could be part of him. The importance being that becoming one with Jesus is the only way to heaven. These statements created some animosity from his detractors and confusion among his disciples. But Jesus pulled his disciples aside and explained that he was really talking about his words. Jesus was the word of God made flesh. But it was his words that had eternal life in them---not the flesh.

God's design for the heart of man is that it be a vessel into which his word is poured---from His heart to ours. His word then wells up like an overflowing fountain, not as some celestial lawn art but as a spiritual fountain overflowing out to hungry and thirsty souls.

It is the Holy Spirit that causes the life in God's word to come alive in our hearts (Jn.6:63, 7:38-39), much like the heat that causes popcorn to go 'pop! pop! pop!' and overflow the bowl in the heart of the popcorn machine.

"...but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life".

What would happen if instead of 'Popcorn', the word 'Grass Seed' or 'Beach Sand' was written on the outside of the popcorn machine? That would no doubt be confusing and cause many to reach instead for Junior Mints. In the same way, a believer's life is to be marked on the outside by the same words of eternal life that are popping on the inside. It is that life, marked by engaging the life-changing power in God's word by faith, that draws others to reach for the bag of salted popcorn.
